Mid-1995, Sega was in a difficult situation. You had launched its new console, the Sega Saturn in North America in September, just days before his Sony PlayStation. Sega knew that the PlayStation was the better machine by far, so at E3 this year (see annual report trade video game) decided to get some PR magic.

With the introduction of Sega, Tom Kalinski, wig Sega America great, threw the bomb, as he spoke, the Sega Saturn was on sale.
Suddenly, moved as a whole four months before the release, $ 399, the stunt appeared in a successful solution.

That is, until the Sony press conference a few minutes later when Steve Sony bigwigs race to the microphone and quietly said a word, $ 299. Amidst the crowd suddenly declared Oh Snap!, Sega executives heard some crying bitterly, knowing that their dogs only trick king.

The rest has been developed risen as a terrible disaster movie all in smoke. The sudden release of the Sega Saturn meant there was virtually no public awareness or marketing of the device, and worse yet none of the games developers have been informed of the sudden change of date, so the Saturn with many incomplete games-games that are supposedly published within four months, not two minutes. Moreover, the fact that he was nothing of Wal-Mart start to start, and Sega was in trouble. lead in the four months, Saturn sold 80,000 units. When the PlayStation was released, it sold 100,000. One day.

Sega has probably been destroyed, and eventually sent nearly 300 million U.S. dollars and had lost almost a third of the dismissed employees. Oh snap indeed.
