If you have a connection to high-speed Internet access to a song, film, books, and a host of other forms of digital entertainment and educational information. But it is also exposed to some hazards and opportunities to be taken for a ride.

Music, video and movie downloads have grown enormously in the last eight years, from free-wheeling, and under the radar of licensing not only legal, but very successful for companies with the right business model.

Music Downloads

If you can think of a song you can probably find a site that offers for download for a fee, usually somewhere around 99 cents per download. Other sites, such as + + + + offers a membership that includes unlimited downloads.

Given the size of music files, and the fact that they are usually in MP3 format, downloads are usually quick and easy. And that can be played on an iPod or other MP3 player or an application standard MP3 and RealPlayer? or Windows Media Player. And while the iPod dominates the portable player market, companies such as Motorola and Sony devices offer consumers. A quick search on Froogle shows a wide range of devices in an equally wide range of prices. Of course, the main cost factor is the amount of memory available for storage. The larger the memory, the more expensive the unit is.

TV shows such as Lost and other ABC programs generally take longer to download, anywhere from five to 10 minutes. And, of course, the possibility of reproducing these programs is more limited.

But even with the utmost restraint, downloading videos (music videos, old TV and other video files is relatively simple and relatively inexpensive. Most sellers (iPod, etc.) charge from 99 cents to a couple of dollars to download a single song. Additionally, smart marketers enable people to download the file to play in at least one computer.

Unlike music, music videos and television programs, movie downloads are still relatively difficult. Many require an hour or more to download (if it does not interrupt the process), require a proprietary application to play, and can only be played on your computer. Some allow the person who downloaded the file "log" that at least two other teams. This may be a little less enjoyable unless you have a networked computer and can play the downloaded movie through an entertainment center.

As with music downloads, more and more vendors come online movies every day, offering everything from the 1930 classic at the current rate, including ultraviolet, Planet of the Apes and Terminator series .

Prices run the gamut, too. Download latest movies can cost as much as $ 19.95 early films, less than ten dollars. Television programs usually run from $ 1.50 to $ 2.00.

As with most things in life, discharge technology offers compromise solutions. Sometimes the amount of time spent downloading the film is simply the time spent driving to the video store. The amount of the adjustments needed to make a player work owner can dull the luster of the ability to watch any film to video stores carry.

Everything comes back to a saying that has been around for ages: Let the buyer beware. The vendors will promise the sky. Rarely deliver it, but sometimes it can come. You have to find out which offers and which just say what they want to hear.
